Education

In support of the New Music on the Point's mission of fostering composers and performers of contemporary music, the Robert Black Foundation is pleased to participate in the NMOP 5-for-5 fund-raising campaign, providing automatic support to the Festival through 2024.

A three-year grant is being award to the Network for New Music's Linda Reichert Commissioning Fund to support its' mission of commissioning music from emerging and established composers.

Education

The Robert Black Foundation Bass Scholarship is awarded annually to one double bassist to attend the 3-week Bang On A Can Summer Institute at MASS MoCA, North Adams, Massachusetts. This year's recipient is Camellia Aftahi.

Documentation

Composer, gutarist, and author Thomas Schuttenhelm will write a monograph on the multimedia work by James Sellars entitled Haplomatics with visual art by David Hockney. The monograph will serve as a supplementary text that accompanies an exhibition at the New Britain Museum of American Art in New Britain CT.

Performance

This grant to the New Music on the Point Festival is to help fund the creation and presentation of A Murmur in the Trees, a collaborative work by Eve Beglarian and Matt Sargent for 24 double basses.  Based on an Emily Dickinson poem of the same title, the 30-minute outdoor work will be performed in 2 locations in Vermont in September, 2021.  Audiences will wander through the woods to hear the beauty of the double basses mixing with the natural sounds of the Vermont woods.

Recording

Support for the editing of Will Yager's audio CD recording of new compositions for solo double bass, written expressly for him. The composers represented are Jean-François Charles, Sivan Cohen Elias, Scott Wollschleger, Christine Burke, Cullyn Murphy, Doug Osmun, Ailie Robertson, Zach Rowden, and James May.

Performance and Commission

Support for Ian Fales' Overtones series, a three-part virtual concert series which showcases newly commissioned works for solo double bass from six composers in the early stages of their careers. The composers are Leah Ofman, Rohan Chandler, Dani Strigi, Graham Drennen, Noah Horowitz, and Xavier Muzik.

Performance

Support for the US premiere of Jordan Dykstra's new 60 minute piece called "In Better Shape Than You Found Me" co-composed with the Dutch composer Koen Nutters during the pandemic. This work for a small ensemble of piano, violin, free-reed, percussion (crotales and vibraphone), and fixed media playback will be premiered at the February 2022 Frequency Festival in Chicago.

The Robert Black Foundation joined with the Moab Music Festival's Commissioning Club for a new work by Kenji Bunch for small ensemble and narrator George Takei. The work will be premiered at the Moab Music Festival in September 2021.
